What is the meaning of “Spiritual Wisdom” in your name?

Wisdom is what is gained through the integration of thoughtful observation, reflection, reason and experience. The Hebrew word for wisdom (hokmah) is related to a root meaning “skill” or “care” and has come to imply “skill in living.” The sages of the Old Testament gave us the wisdom literature (Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon) to show us what God-focused, mindful observation and discernment can tell us about ourselves, God and the world around us, to help us to live skillfully.

Now, in the age of the New Covenant, we also have the indwelling Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ to help lead us into the wisdom of God (John 16:13). By using Spirit-led observation, thought and discernment, grounded in Scripture, ECSW pursues wisdom regarding how we can recognize and follow the Holy Spirit’s activity in our growth and participate in it, as well as how to serve the Church in her spiritual growth.

What is the purpose of ECSW’s council?

ECSW’s council was convened to cultivate a community of discerning Christian professionals in biblical interpretation, spirituality, psychology, philosophy and ministry to serve as a “think tank” or “wisdom council” in the field of spiritual formation. It is an outgrowth of one of our core values: a commitment to know what we are talking about in the field of spiritual formation. The community is committed to meet two to three times a year to discuss and reflect together on current research, observations and study in the field of spiritual formation.

ECSW recognizes the complexity of discerning wisdom in this vital field of spiritual formation. The scope of this endeavor requires input from more than one individual and more than one field of study. The council is a community of professionals in relevant fields who have a love for the Church of Jesus Christ, a passion to see her grow in truth and love, and a heart of discernment in the movements of the Holy Spirit.

Do you train people in spiritual formation?

Our desire is to resource the church in the area of deep spiritual growth. Through our relational ministry we hope to train leaders in the church in deepening their own relationship with God, as well as helping their brothers and sisters in Christ to do the same.
